Your Signature Look Doesn't Need a Seasonal Makeover

Your Signature Look Doesn't Need a Seasonal Makeover

Three simple ways to refresh your makeup for fall without giving up what already works.

Every fall, we're told it's time to change our makeup.

New colors. New trends. New products. New everything.

But what if you already love the way you do your makeup?

Do you really need to start over just because the leaves are changing?

I've been a beauty advisor since 2009, and I've watched plenty of trends come and go. Some I've enjoyed experimenting with. Others I've been perfectly happy to admire from a distance.

And somewhere along the way, I've learned something important.

Having a signature beauty look doesn't mean you're stuck in a rut. It means you've figured out what works for you.

There's a difference.

My Berry Eyeshadow Doesn't Know It's October

And frankly, I see no reason to tell it.

If you've been following Beauty Quips for a while, you probably know that I love eye makeup.

As a photographer, I've always believed the eyes are the windows to the soul. Naturally, I enjoy making mine stand out.

For me, that means berry-colored eyeshadow.

I have hazel eyes, and berry tones really bring out their color. I've worn variations of this look for years, and I have no intention of giving it up just because another eyeshadow trend comes along.

Does that mean I never try anything different?

Of course not!

But I know what I like, and I know what makes me feel confident.

And isn't that what a signature look is supposed to do?

The beauty industry has a funny way of making us feel like we need to change everything every few months.

Personally, I think that's exhausting.

Not to mention expensive.

So instead of giving my makeup bag a complete seasonal overhaul, I prefer making a few little adjustments.

Here are three of my favorites.

1. Change One Color, Not Your Entire Makeup Routine

One of the easiest ways to give your makeup a seasonal refresh is to change a single color.

That's it.

You don't need a brand-new eyeshadow palette, six lipsticks, and a collection of brushes you have no idea how to use.

Maybe you trade your summer pink lipstick for a richer berry shade.

Maybe you experiment with a warm bronze eyeshadow.

Or maybe you simply choose a slightly deeper version of a color you already love.

For me, one of the changes I've made over time has actually been my blush.

I used to gravitate toward rosy pinks. These days, I find myself reaching for peach tones instead.

It's not a dramatic transformation, but it's a change I enjoy.

And that's the point.

Your makeup should evolve because you want it to, not because a seasonal trend says it has to.

If you're happy with your current look, keep it!

There's no beauty rule requiring you to buy something new every October.

2. Let Your Nails Do the Seasonal Talking

Now, if there's one area where I really enjoy embracing fall colors, it's my nails.

Give me navy, wine, rich jewel tones, and those beautiful coffee-inspired shades, and I'm a happy girl.

I especially love the taupes and warm neutrals that start appearing in fall nail collections.

They're seasonal without being over the top.

And while I enjoy seeing all the creative Halloween nail designs, they're generally not my personal style.

I'd rather wear a gorgeous wine-colored manicure that looks just as appropriate at the grocery store as it does at dinner.

That's one reason I enjoy Red Aspen Dashes.

They give me a polished manicure without spending a huge amount of time doing my nails, and I can change my look when the mood strikes.

For busy women, that's a pretty nice combination.

And here's something else I love about using nails for a seasonal update.

You can experiment with a color without changing a single thing about your everyday makeup.

Your signature look stays the same, but you've added a little autumn personality.

Sometimes that's all you need.

3. Try a Seasonal Accent Without Following Every Trend

Can we talk about beauty trends for a minute?

Because some of them are wonderful.

And some of them leave me wondering who has that kind of time in the morning.

Take halo eyes, for example.

It's an eye makeup technique that creates a spotlight effect by placing a lighter shade in the center of the eyelid, with darker colors on either side.

I've seen some beautiful examples.

But it's not for me.

And that's perfectly okay.

Just because a technique is popular doesn't mean it belongs in my routine.

The same goes for seasonal makeup trends.

If you love dramatic fall eyeshadow, go for it!

If you prefer a natural look with a deeper lip color, that's wonderful too.

And if your makeup looks exactly the same in October as it did in July?

Well, welcome to my berry eyeshadow club.

The important thing is finding little ways to enjoy beauty without feeling pressured to keep up with every new idea.

Maybe your seasonal accent is a richer lipstick.

Maybe it's a touch of shimmer.

And yes, I'm still wearing shimmer after 40. That particular beauty rule has never impressed me.

Or maybe it's simply switching to a warmer blush.

You don't have to reinvent your face to celebrate a new season.

The Beauty of Knowing What Works

Here's something I've noticed as I've gotten older.

I'm much less interested in following beauty rules simply because someone says I should.

I've learned which colors make my eyes pop.

I know which products I can apply quickly.

And I've figured out which parts of my routine deserve a little extra attention.

That doesn't mean I've stopped learning or experimenting.

Far from it!

It just means I'm more selective about what earns a place in my makeup bag.

And I think there's something freeing about that.

We're constantly being encouraged to buy the newest product, try the latest technique, or completely refresh our routines.

But sometimes the best beauty decision is to keep doing what already works.

Then, when something genuinely catches your attention, you can have a little fun trying it.

No pressure.

No complicated routine.

No need to look like somebody else.

Just you, enjoying makeup on your own terms.

Your Fall Beauty Challenge

This week, I'd love for you to try something simple.

Take a look at your everyday makeup routine and choose just one thing you might enjoy changing for fall.

It could be a lip color, a blush shade, an eyeshadow accent, or your next manicure.

And if you can't think of anything you want to change?

That's perfectly fine too!

Your signature look doesn't need a seasonal makeover to be beautiful.

It just needs to make you feel like yourself.

Now I'm curious.

What's one beauty product, color, or technique that has become part of your signature look?

For me, it's berry eyeshadow.

And I suspect it'll still be there when spring rolls around.
